The Printmaking Program at the University of North Texas seeks applicants for the MFA in Studio Art with concentration in Printmaking.

MFA Application Priority Deadline: February 1, 2021 (for enrolling in Fall 2021).

Graduate Study in Printmaking at the University of North Texas is a broad and intensive experience for artists engaging in traditional and expanded printmaking processes interconnected with all studio disciplines. The printmaking area is a vibrant community of individuals from a variety of artistic and geographic backgrounds. Art faculty serve as mentors for graduate students in developing conceptual, formal, and technical excellence through studio practice, critical dialog, and professional development. Our students also take graduate courses in art history including one specifically oriented in the History of Printmaking taught by Dr. Kelly Donahue-Wallace. Our MFA candidates build experience by participating in exhibitions, portfolio exchanges, printmaking conferences, workshops, collaborations with visiting artists, and other professional activities.

Printmaking Studios and Equipment:
Our new beautifully-lit studios are carefully managed and maintained by our Printmaking Technician. The printmaking studios occupy 5700 square feet divided into a large space for relief, intaglio, monotype, and lithography processes, a space for screen print and artist’s books, a space for letterpress, and ancillary spaces including a darkroom, acid room, screen washout room, spray booth room, and critique spaces. In addition to these community spaces, we have a separate 700 square foot MFAPrintmaking Space. Studio Art graduate students also have additional Private MFA Studio Spaces clustered to foster interdisciplinary dialog, networking, and collaboration. Studio Art Research Resources:
The UNT campus offers professional research resources including exceptional studios and equipment, professional galleries, student galleries, a digital fabrication lab, a textiles digital fabrication lab, the UNT Rare Book Collection, and UNT Elm Fork Natural Heritage Collection of taxidermy specimens. The surrounding Dallas and Fort Worth areas offer world-class art museums including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Trammel Crow Collection of Asian Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art among many others. The region has a vibrant contemporary art gallery scene that you can begin exploring at Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas and here at Fort Worth art Dealers Association . There are many other cultural and aesthetic research resources in the area. If you let me know your interests, I can share more specific ideas too.

Teaching Opportunities for Graduate Students:
Our Graduate students have opportunities to gain professional experience while earning a stipend to support their education. The Graduate Teaching Assistantships are available in the CVAD Foundations Program. Graduate Teaching Assistants lead hands-on studio sessions for a section in four foundations Art and Design classes under the direction of a Lead Faculty Member. Non-teaching Assistantships may also be available on a limited basis. Graduate Teaching Fellowships in Printmaking have typically been available in the third year.

The University of North Texas Printmaking area is pleased to announce an exhibition of student work on view in UNT’s Union Art Gallery from Monday, November 16th, 2020 to Thursday, January 7th, 2021. Entitled Side by Side, the show features works that are the culmination of students ’ hard work in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program of the College of Visual Arts and Design. Come and see a multitude of pieces, ranging from collage work to hand-bound books, traditional prints to three-dimensional installations. Side by Side features pieces made using the printmaking methods of lithography, intaglio, screenprint, monoprint, and relief. Many pieces are a combination of multiple techniques. The students participating in the exhibition are:

Call for student Proposals: Remote Contact Symposium

University of Tennessee, Knoxville will host Remote Contact, a student-led virtual printmaking symposium intended to provide a forum for students in printmaking. The symposium is free, but limited to 300 attendees.

PROPOSALS DUE JANUARY 12, 2021. Proposals from current undergraduate and graduate students, in the United States and abroad, are being accepted. Students who graduated during the 2019-2020 academic year are also invited to submit proposals and to attend the symposium.

The symposium will include a keynote address by Miranda Metcalf, founder of the printmaking podcast pine|copper|lime; a plenary presentation by Umberto Giovannini, Director of the Opificio della Rosa, a printmaking studio based in Morciano di Romagna, Italy; and a second plenary presentation on “Playing Cards as Drivers for the Development of Print in Europe,” co-presented by University of Tennessee, Knoxville art history faculty members Kelli Wood and Sean Roberts. We look forward to receiving your proposals.

Students are invited to submit proposals for a variety of symposium events including

·         Five panel sessions on a range of topics

·         Three virtual printmaking exhibitions curated by students

·         Time-based program featuring films and animations using print media

·         An exchange portfolio

The symposium will also include a Friday evening social virtually hosted by the Remote Contact Steering Committee as well as a Saturday Night Virtual Dance Party with Sarah Shebaro, “Mini Tiger,” as DJ

Cold Brew & Careers + Internships 

Feb, 17th 10-12 pm in ART 464.  

This workshop is intended for CVAD students to learn how to search and apply for creative jobs and internships using Handshake. This guided session will address any questions students may have about on-campus employment, creative resumes and other helpful resources. The internship portion will cover the value of experiential learning in an internship and how to search and apply for these opportunities. 

Cold brew coffee and bagels will be provided, and art supplies will be given away!
