Artist’s Lecture: 2-3pm Thursday, 3/29/18 ENV 130

Beili Liu is a visual artist who creates material-and-process-driven, site-responsive
installations. Oftentimes embodying transience, fragility, and the passage of time, Liu’s

immersive installations are engaged with multifaceted dichotomies: lightness contrasted with heft; fierceness countered by resilience; and chaos balanced by quiet order. Working with commonplace materials and elements such as thread, scissors, paper, stone, fire, and water, Liu manipulates their intrinsic qualities to extrapolate complex cultural narratives. Born in Jilin, China, Beili Liu now lives and works in Austin, Texas, USA. Liu received her MFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and is a Professor of Art at the University of Texas at Austin.

2018-2019 Hashinger Hall Post-MFA Artist-in-Residence position @KU

It is with great enthusiasm that we announce our search for the 2018-2019 University of Kansas Artist-in-Residence position. The deadline for this position is April 15, 2018. All disciplines will be considered. The link to the SlideRoom application is located here: https://visualartku.slideroom.com/#/permalink/program/41943

The position is unique in its relationship to our arts dormitory—Hashinger Hall. Artists in Residence are provided a furnished one-bedroom apartment in the dormitory (including all utilities, cable TV, landline telephone), studio space within the dormitory (that is also open to students) and a separate studio in the Department of Visual Arts facilities. Residents are also provided with a KU Cuisine Dining plan for the entire duration of their residency, and have the opportunity to earn income as a paid lecturer for, generally, two courses during the residency, with the possibility of additional teaching if there are departmental needs. At the culmination of the residency the Artist will have a solo exhibition of their work in the recently renovated Art + Design gallery—a professional quality gallery space. Residents will have access to a wide variety of tools and technologies in the Department of Visual Art to help them in their studio practices.

Residents are expected to interact with students in Hashinger Hall and facilitate programming as part of their residency, among other service duties in the Department of Visual Art. They should be the kind of individuals that are outgoing and able to make those kinds of connections to students and should be actively engaged in a rigorous studio/creative practice of their own. Residents must hold an MFA or equivalent in fields that comprise the KU Department of Visual Art's studio areas or related fields by the time of appointment. Due to the nature of this residency it is best suited for an emerging artist with an active and engaged creative practice and exhibition record.

Call for Entry: Validity

Call for Entry: Validity
Catapult Creative House Gallery
Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, MO

Validity is a call for visual artworks in which female artists are welcome to express their personal stories of how feminism has shaped their lives. Every experience is valid, and every story should be told. It is important to share and express aspects of ones life through art. In today’s social-political climate, women must stand together to voice their views and experiences of the world.

For some, “Feminism” is perceived as a derisive and offensive term. Art critic Griselda Pollock states, “feminism signifies… a dynamic and self-critical response and intervention, not a platform.” Feminism has transformed through generations, allowing contemporary women/girls/females or those who identify as such to add their own experiences, ideas, and dialogue. It is important to recognize women who have believe that being a feminist is a unique and vital role to the development of the world.
