The MFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Printmaking provides students with an intensive and challenging studio environment for committed individuals planning careers as practicing artists. It is a three-year, full time, 60 credit hour program. While the individual program of study will vary, the emphasis is on studio work, supplemented by graduate studio seminars, critiques, and coursework in art history and criticism.
The program encourages students to experiment and master print media while refining their aesthetic and conceptual research. Approaching printmaking through a wide frame, graduate students are able to explore various avenues for artistic output. Students engage with the history and tradition of printmaking while expanding upon the definition of contemporary multiples and visual culture by using an independent, cross-disciplinary approach. Students work autonomously to develop their own studio practice and ways of addressing contemporary art issues while finding their own position within the history of printed media. The intimate size of the program enhances this foundation and allows for a more focused experience with professional faculty and an active visit artist/critic program.
Graduate students are able to work alongside visiting artists through Red Ridge Editions, the collaborate fine art print publishing research side of the Printmaking area. Previous visiting artists have included Adriane Herman, Lari Gibbons, Lenore Thomas, Leslie Friedman, and Joseph D'Uva. Upcoming visiting artists include Yoonmi Nam, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, and Janet Ballweg.
Financial assistance in the form of assistantships and fellowships are available for teaching, gallery, and media area assistance. The School of Art also offers annual summer scholarships to support student learning at prestigious international institutions and organizations such as Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, MFA Studio Berlin, the University of Arkansas Rome Center, and many more.
