Nicole Hand, Compressed Observance

Thank you to Visiting Printmaker Nicole Hand, who printed an edition for Compressed Observance with the assistance of thirteen students, three faculty members and a volunteer. During her visit Nicole also delivered a lecture to Core Drawing students and participated in a P.R.I.N.T Press open house in which assistants demonstrated color intaglio printing techniques. 

Nicole's project was covered by the North Texas Daily and UNT News Service. The project is the first of a new subscription program in which members receive a hand-pulled, limited edition print from the collaboration in exchange for support to the program. 

Nicole's visit was co-sponsored by Core Drawing, UNT Printmaking and P.R.I.N.T Press.

4th International Small Print Show (due 11/1)

El Minia University is hosting the Student International Small Print Show in Egypt.

The deadline is 1 November and the opening takes plate 27 April in conjunction with the annual conference of the Faculty of Fine Arts. The show comprises a selection of works of young Printmaking artists from all over the world regardless of the geographical, cultural and political barriers.

This residency marks the beginning of a subscription-based publication series highlighting the work of a printmaker. Visiting Artist Nicole Hand will work with students and faculty to complete an edition of hand-pulled fine art prints, and a limited number of impressions will be available through memberships. The artist and faculty will guide the students through the publication process, providing them with professional training and experience. Download info about the new subscription program here.

Nicole will give a presentation about her work as part of the Core Drawing lecture series. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Nicole Hand is a Professor of Art at Murray State University in Kentucky, where she teaches printmaking, bookbinding and drawing. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in more than 300 solo, invitational, and juried exhibitions. Nicole has given lectures and workshops in over thirty venues including Atlanta Printmakers Studio, University of North Carolina, Greenville, The University of Arizona, University of Texas at Arlington, and Ohio University. She received her MFA in printmaking from the University of Miami, and a BFA from the University of South Dakota.

Registering for History of Printmaking Spring 2015

The Spring 2015 History of Prints course will be restricted to Printmaking Pre-Majors, Majors, and Graduate students.  Dr. Kelly Donahue Wallace has shaped this course around a series of visits to print collections, important readings, and lively discussions. 

Register this October!  In mid October Dr. Donahue-Wallace will have permission codes with a list of current majors, pre-majors and graduate students in printmaking.  Students need to have completed both Survey I and II before starting this course.  Contact Dr. Donahue-Wallace for further information.

CVAD T-shirt Design Competition (due 10/20)

Interim Dean Eric Ligon is sponsoring a CVAD t-shirt design contest. There are three $100 prizes. Designs are due Monday, October 20 by 5:00 p.m. The shirts will be printed by PanEctor live during the CVAD Preview and Portfolio Day event. See the image for more details. 

Print Austin (Nov. 1 deadline)

PrintAustin is a month-long event celebrating the art of original printmaking, educating the public about the traditions of printmaking as well as showcasing the innovations of the contemporary approach.

The second annual PrintAustin will take place January 15 to February 15, 2015.

Reception: Thursday October 16th from 5p.m. to 8p.m.

This solo exhibition by Amy Fillipp (BFA 2014) will feature print installations that play with with dichotomies of stability and instability, organization and disorganization.  The installations involve cutting and sewing together a large quantity of mono prints referencing ideas of morphing landscapes and the inherent dualities that occur in nature.

An internship at P.R.I.N.T Press is available to one undergraduate student for spring semester 2015. It requires 8 to 10 hours per week for 3 credit hours. Duties include assisting staff and visiting artists on special projects and events.

Luke Ball in IPCNY's New Prints 2014

Congratulations to Luke Ball (MFA 2015), whose work was selected by Nicola López for SOMEWHERES & NOWHERES: New Prints 2014/Autumn at the International Print Center New York (IPCNY).

Founded in 2000, IPCNY is the first and only non-profit institution devoted solely to the exhibition and understanding of fine art prints. Its New Prints Program is a comprehensive program of  international and thematic exhibitions.

UNT Printmakers at MAPC: Print City 2014

UNT printmakers participated in the 2014 Mid America Print Council conference from September 24 through 27 at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan:

• Artist-in-Residence Randy Bolton (BFA 1978) led the PrintMedia Tour at Cranbrook Academy of Art;
• Laura Drapac (MFA) participated in an exchange portfolio “Inspired by Mary” at U245 Gallery at WSU;
• Professor Lari Gibbons participated in “Finding Printmaking's Place in an Interdisciplinary and Post Digital World,” a panel presentation chaired by Jonathan McFadden and David Wischer of the University of Kentucky;
• Kristine Joy Mallari (BFA) represented Gamblin Artists Colors at the Vendor's Fair;
• Brian Spolans (MFA) demonstrated “Controlled Chaos: Versatility and Variety of Mark-Making within Screenprint” with Jennifer Ghormley and Nichole Maury;
• And work produced at P.R.I.N.T was included in Impress(ed) at Alfred Berkowitz Gallery at the  University of Michigan-Dearborn. Impress(ed) is a gathering of print-based works brought together to reveal the range, prevalence and scope of printmaking in America as it is happening today. The inspiration for the show comes from the forthcoming publication called Contemporary American Printmakers.

TASA Conference Opportunities

The TASA 2014 conference will take place Oct. 23 - 25 at the Omni Hotel in Dallas.

The conference attendance/membership fee for students is $25 ($5 for TASA membership and $20 for the conference.) Students will be fed lunch on Friday and Saturday, see lectures and attend workshops, as well as having the option to enter the "one square foot" exhibition at El Centro College.

This year we are bringing in Diego Leclery and Pedro Velez, both Whitney Biennial 2014 artists, and Sabina Ott, Chicago artist and curator. Our keynote this year is Terry Allen and Trenton Doyle Hancock will be around Thursday night for a scholarship fundraiser. Also, our very own Margaret Meehan received the Paul Hanna Lecture award and will be discussing her recent work made at ArtPace.
