A Review of Hank St. John's Solo Show at Meme Gallery by Cat Snapp
In April 2011 Hank St. John’s work was on display at Meme Gallery in Denton, Texas. The show consisted of approximately one dozen intricate pen drawings depicting animals as predator and prey. The compositions reference the icons of medieval religious art and the intense line work is reminiscent of Northern Renaissance masters. St. John utilizes pattern and texture in a descriptive manner, but also in a way that allows the viewer to get close to the work and still be intrigued by the smaller formal windows within it. St. John studied printmaking at the University of North Texas and there is a clear formal link between his drawings currently on display and intaglio processes such as engraving and etching.
