A Review of the "Open Portfolio Sessions" at SGCI 2011 by Linda Santana
The "Open Portfolio" event at the 2011 St. Louis Southern Graphics Council International conference was an exceptional way to connect to the print world and to become more familiar with contemporary prints. By far one of the most popular and lively of the events held during the conference, it was the one that I anticipated the most. It was well-organized into three seventy-five minute sessions with a fifteen-minute transitional period for setting up and taking down. The event gave printmakers a chance to speak about their work, helped put “a face to the print” and was a welcome change from navigating through artists' websites. Although the venue at the Chase Plaza Hotel was overwhelmingly crowded and the lighting was sub-par, it was enjoyable and memorable because I was able to meet artists and see their prints in person. After "Open Portfolio," I was invigorated, inspired, and felt a sense of tranquility knowing that the tradition of printmaking is in good hands.
