A Review of the “Blessed Unions” Panel at SGCI 2011 by Laura Drapac
A major theme during the 2011 Southern Graphics Council International conference, “Equilibrium,” was the exploration of printmaking community members coming together as something greater than themselves. “Blessed Unions,” a panel chaired by Blake Sanders, featured John Hancock, Anita Jung, and Adriane Herman in its discussion of collaborative print relationships. The panelists relayed their histories of how their collaborative relationships came to exist, as well as their tips for success. John Hancock initiated the panelist discussion with his relaxed narration of the collaborative works and process between himself and his brother, Charles Hancock: “. . . it’s more of a ‘hey, can you fix this’ approach.” Anita Jung’s collaborative relationship with her husband yielded the discussion of working with each other’s careers in mind, and emphasized being flexible not only as artists, but also as family members. Adriane Herman’s segment discussed the delegation of tasks based upon the respective strengths within her collaboration with her husband. The panel wrapped with an invitation to the wedding ceremony of Blake Sanders and his fiancé, Hannah March Campbell, as well as tips for the newlyweds on keeping the peace in their new marital collaboration.
