The Printmaking Program at the University of North Texas seeks applicants for the MFA in Studio Art with concentration in Printmaking.

MFA Application Priority Deadline: February 1, 2021 (for enrolling in Fall 2021).

Graduate Study in Printmaking at the University of North Texas is a broad and intensive experience for artists engaging in traditional and expanded printmaking processes interconnected with all studio disciplines. The printmaking area is a vibrant community of individuals from a variety of artistic and geographic backgrounds. Art faculty serve as mentors for graduate students in developing conceptual, formal, and technical excellence through studio practice, critical dialog, and professional development. Our students also take graduate courses in art history including one specifically oriented in the History of Printmaking taught by Dr. Kelly Donahue-Wallace. Our MFA candidates build experience by participating in exhibitions, portfolio exchanges, printmaking conferences, workshops, collaborations with visiting artists, and other professional activities.

Printmaking Studios and Equipment:
Our new beautifully-lit studios are carefully managed and maintained by our Printmaking Technician. The printmaking studios occupy 5700 square feet divided into a large space for relief, intaglio, monotype, and lithography processes, a space for screen print and artist’s books, a space for letterpress, and ancillary spaces including a darkroom, acid room, screen washout room, spray booth room, and critique spaces. In addition to these community spaces, we have a separate 700 square foot MFAPrintmaking Space. Studio Art graduate students also have additional Private MFA Studio Spaces clustered to foster interdisciplinary dialog, networking, and collaboration. Studio Art Research Resources:
The UNT campus offers professional research resources including exceptional studios and equipment, professional galleries, student galleries, a digital fabrication lab, a textiles digital fabrication lab, the UNT Rare Book Collection, and UNT Elm Fork Natural Heritage Collection of taxidermy specimens. The surrounding Dallas and Fort Worth areas offer world-class art museums including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Trammel Crow Collection of Asian Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art among many others. The region has a vibrant contemporary art gallery scene that you can begin exploring at Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas and here at Fort Worth art Dealers Association . There are many other cultural and aesthetic research resources in the area. If you let me know your interests, I can share more specific ideas too.

Teaching Opportunities for Graduate Students:
Our Graduate students have opportunities to gain professional experience while earning a stipend to support their education. The Graduate Teaching Assistantships are available in the CVAD Foundations Program. Graduate Teaching Assistants lead hands-on studio sessions for a section in four foundations Art and Design classes under the direction of a Lead Faculty Member. Non-teaching Assistantships may also be available on a limited basis. Graduate Teaching Fellowships in Printmaking have typically been available in the third year.

Andrew DeCaen Visiting Artist's Project at Ohio University

Associate Professor Andrew DeCaen was a visiting artist at the Ohio University last week.  He worked with Melissa Haviland and a group of student assistants to screen print 150 feet of Tyvek for a future wall installation. The community at OU is awesome – welcoming, thoughtful, and totally invested in the project. They kept the energy high through this intense experience.

Studio Art in Florence Summer 2020 Monotype and Figure Drawing

Study Abroad in Florence, Italy in Summer 2020
Explore the heart of the Italian Renaissance. Sketch on location in Florence's numerous world class museums, elegant palaces, peaceful churches, vibrant piazzas, vast gardens, bustling markets, and engaging exhibitions of contemporary art. Draw from the model and make monotype prints in the studios at the Santa Reparata International School of Art (SRISA). The Santa Reparata International School of Art will also organize optional weekend trips to various Italian cities.

Impressions in the City: Florence (Instructor: Andrew DeCaen)
This course will focus Monotype printmaking at the SRISA printmaking studios and creative research in the city of Florence. Students will explore various monotype printmaking techniques including additive, subtractive, ghost, trace, and stencil methods with multiple-color printing. Students will also gain a personal perspective of life in Florence while sketching and collecting inspirations in public spaces such as museums, historical sites, piazzas, markets, and train stations.

This course will focus on drawing the human figure. Special emphasis will be placed on drawing from observation with accuracy and sensitivity to anatomical understanding. Students will draw from nude male and female human models at the SRISA studios. Students will also spend mornings sketching at Florentine museums and piazzas from many of the world's greatest treasures in figurative drawing, painting, and sculpture.

The Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition is the second-longest running juried print and drawing competition in the country. Every two years it features the best contemporary graphic artwork from around the globe. This year’s juror is Eun Lee. Lee was born in Seoul, Korea and has had many roles in academia and service. She was the program coordinator for the printmaking minor at SCAD in Savannah and served as the Conference Coordinator of SGC International, the largest printmaking organization in North America. Also during her tenure with SGCI, she has served as President, Vice President of External Affairs, Chair of the Nominations Committee, Chair of the Awards Committee and Student Representative. She has also served the prior SGEO organization as President and Vice President. Eun received her MFA from the University of Notre Dame and her BFA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Independence is a group exhibition bringing together Texas-based artists Helen Altman, Alicia Eggert, Letitia Huckaby, Liss LaFleur, and Leslie Martinez. How does history inform the present and shape how we view the future? Artists explore the overarching concept of time and the self in relation to society. Works in the exhibition reflect on issues of our times: identity, social dominance, ecological impact, and consumerism.
