During fall semester 2010, students in Lari Gibbons' printmaking classes reviewed videos and DVDs from CVAD’s Visual Resources Collection, which comprises more than 1,000 holdings covering a large spectrum of time periods and media. (It also has an encyclopedic digital image collection with more than 60,000 items!)
Ann Graham (Visual Resources Curator) and Jennifer Richmond (Visual Resources Assistant Curator) worked with Lari Gibbons (Associate Professor) to select the reviews that appear on this blog. The winning reviews will be released in the coming weeks.
A Review of “Structures: Fred Wilson” in ART:21: Art in the Twenty-First Century, Season Three by Stephen Menton (Beginning Etching student)
The segment about Fred Wilson on the DVD Art in the 21st Century: Season Three provides a brief introduction to the artist’s work and methods. The film includes three scenes; the first is devoted to sculpture, the second printmaking, and the third exhibit design, all shown while Wilson verbally details the ideology that governs his art-making techniques. Where the film falls short, however, is in the artist’s background and breadth of work. Granted, this is only an introduction, but each scene features only one example (for a grand total of three), a few shots of the artist (with most of the work being done by an assistant), and very disconnected transitions. Though viewers will have to look elsewhere for an in-depth explanation of Wilson’s work, this short film does serve to evoke interest in an important contemporary artist.
